Where It Started
Before he ever hung his own sign, Bob Smith spent 25 years learning the commercial and industrial construction trade at Hallmark and Bachus, one of the most respected outfits in the Birmingham area. He learned how to read a job, manage a crew, and keep his word on a deadline. By 1984, he and his wife Barbara were ready to build something of their own.
Bob Smith Construction, Inc. started the way most good things in Alabama do - as a family operation. Bob ran the jobs. Barbara ran the office. They built the company the same way they built everything else: with hard work, honest numbers, and a handshake that meant something. Their office on Highway 11 in Springville became home base for a business that would spend the next four decades shaping the landscape of Northeast Alabama.
The Man Behind the Name
Bob Smith passed away on July 18, 2019, after a life defined by hard work, faith, family, and community. He grew up in Blountsville, AL, played football and basketball at J.B. Pennington High School, married his high school sweetheart Barbara Faye Mardis in 1964, and spent the rest of his life building… both structures and relationships.
Outside of work, Bob coached little league football and baseball, served on the Executive Board of the Center Point Ballpark, and was a lifelong Auburn fan who traveled the country following Tigers football, baseball, and basketball. He was the kind of man who drove the church bus, kept babies in the nursery so young parents could worship, and showed up wherever he was needed.
The company he and Barbara built together continues to operate out of Springville, AL still doing the work the way Bob insisted it be done. No shortcuts. No surprises. Just solid construction and a commitment to the communities we serve.

Today, Bob Smith Construction, Inc. remains an ALDOT-approved general contractor specializing in commercial construction, municipal infrastructure, sports and recreation facilities, and public works projects across Northeast Alabama. From pedestrian bridges to community centers, from parks to sports complexes, we build the places that bring communities together.
Regional municipalities and private developments have trusted us with project after project over the last several years, and we continue to work with municipalities, school systems, and state agencies throughout the region. Our name is on some of the most recognized landmarks in Northeast Alabama - and we plan to keep it that way.
